A 19th century French Louis Philippe style enfilade buffet d'appui or gentleman's buffet handcrafted of solid walnut and chestnut by skilled craftsmen near Bayeux, a town on the Aure river in the Normandy region of northwestern France, circa 1880s. The rectangular plank top sits above two drawers over three paneled doors that open to reveal a single shelf and ample storage. Resting on a plinth base with short bracket feet. Brass circular knobs and inlaid wood escutcheons. Gentleman buffets like this were taller so that men could lean upon them as they had a drink.
This handsome antique French buffet features a stately, tailored architecture that is typical of the style. It retains its rich, lustrous color and sheen, resulting from years of waxing and polishing and is ideal for modern or traditional decor. The straight lines common to the period allow this buffet to easily mix with other periods and styles. It works wonderfully as a media cabinet in the family room or a server in the dining room.
