The EWS MEA Wagon Triple Pack of models depict 4-acle open mineral wagons numbered 391340, 391434 and 391569, in EWS Maroon.
The MEA was a conversion of the HEA hopper wagon, by removing the hopper bodyshell and replacing it with an open box design with a flat base. Just like the HEA, the MEA was used to convey coal to domestic sites, as well as other bulk material like scrap or ballast.
These new wagon are based on extensive research and underwent a painstaking design process, culminating in products that are highly accurate, feature numerous separately fitted parts including brake details, and include a die-cast weight for smooth running.
Often seen running in long block rakes or mixed into ‘Speedlink’ railfreight services, the MEA is perfect for late sectorisation and post-privatisation era layouts, running behind classic locos like the 37 and 66.
When EWS reviewed the wagon fleet it inherited from the three Railfreight regional companies in 1996, it decided to order a further 120 ‘MEA’ rebuilds, with delivery completed in 1997. Orders for a further 270 soon followed. By 2008, 500 of the wagons were still in service. The EWS maroon-liveried wagons in this pack each has a different running number.
