Owner Purchased Directly From Master Navajo Artisan, Virginia Bia, at Hubbell Trading Post
Ganado, Arizona.
This gorgeous Navajo saddle blanket was woven by famous master artisan, Virginia Bia.
Initially purchased by the owner in 1985 at the Hubbell Trading Post in Ganado, Arizona, directly from Virginia Bia, who said, "the blanket is modern, most similar to a Mexican Saltillo diamond pattern. Unlike most sarapes and blankets, the pad is made from a very dense, coarse spun wool". The blanket is a combination of red, black, and white wool, with a reverse color pattern on the opposite side. There is a beautiful turquoise stripe down the center of the pad on both sides.
Pad measures 49" long x 29" wide.
This item is on consignment with Delfina Saddlery. Delfina Saddlery has done its best to ensure the item is described accurately, and will connect the buyer with the current owner at time of sale. Exchange of provenance may be a courtesy extended by the seller but is not guaranteed by Delfina Saddlery.
In preparation for sale, Delfina had the blanket professionally cleaned and examined by an expert appraiser of Navajo weavings to ensure the saddle pad was being accurately represented as a Navajo weaving. Delfina Saddlery guarantees this beautiful saddle blanket is a 100% authentic Navajo saddle blanket/pad. Similar saddle blankets made by the Navajo sell for $2,000 - $50,000, depending on size, pattern, and quality. We have included photos of relevant markers experts use to determine authenticity of Navajo weavings; it is up to the buyer to examine these provided photos carefully and make your own decision about the item's value.
The current owner had the pad stitched onto a traditional bareback pad. Additionally, there are two leather tabs with dee rings attached near the rear of the blanket. The grab strap from the bareback pad is easily accessible while riding bareback on the pad. A single-point attachment girth (ie; western or bareback girths) can be attached to the nylon billets on either side. The bareback pad's padding has been removed in two areas approximately near where a rider's knee would be, enabling the rider to have a better feel of the horse's body while mounted. They also give the rider a small 'perch' on which to prop their knee to assist in maintaining balance and proper position while riding. On the bottom of this bareback pad, there is some mild discolored spots in two areas (shown in photographs next to a penny for size reference). These marks are purely cosmetic and absolutely do not impact the Navajo pad in any way; nor do they affect the overall performance of either pad, separately or together.
The bareback pad is attached in 3 small areas and was installed in such a way that it would be quite simple to detach the two pads without damaging the Navajo blanket.
The buyer can request that the bareback pad and/or the leather tabs with dees be removed by Delfina Saddlery prior to shipping, free of charge. If the buyer would like any leather reinforcements added to the bareback pad's billets or grab strap, or reinforcement/girth guard strips added to the sides of the Navajo blanket, please email us at [email protected] after purchase to discuss your options and all relevant costs.
