The t-shirt features a Northern Soul logo. This musical phenomena is often cited by musicologists as the beginning of contemporary Club-culture ( with its’ emphasis on dance & ‘street’), & of the concept of ‘DJ As Superstar’. Northern Soul DJs catered for their audience’ taste for authentic sounds outside the mainstream, rather than imposing a mainstream agenda upon them. Gloria Jones’ hit ‘Tainted Love’ was a great favorite & inspired Northern Soul fans Dave Ball & Marc Almond to cover it in the 1980s. It could be argued that Northern Soul was perhaps the first authentic ‘peoples’ genre’ in that it made artists/songs popular through their airing in the cauldron of the nightclub, rather than through the Radio/TV (& thus Establishment-controlled ) media.
