Her earlier work, starting in the business as a teenager, had been with James Brown, recording on his Try Me label. In 1965 she signed with Tamla Motown. In 1967 she collapsed onstage during a performance with Marvin Gaye, & died in 1970 from a brain-tumor after several unsuccessful operations.
