About the Character:

1. There are more than 20000 species of bees. Honey bees form a very small percentage of total bees with only 6 to 11 species being recognized by humans out of 44 subspecies.
2. Life span of the honey bee lies between 170 to 180 days except the queens. Queens live for 2 to 3 years because they are solely responsible for laying eggs.
3. Worker bees have very low life span because they never sleep and continuously work day and night and would gather food for queen.
4. If the queen bee dies workers will select young larva as a queen and would feed it food called as “royal jelly”.
5. An adult female queen would lay 2000 eggs a day.
6. Drones (male bees) will die immediately after mating with the queen and would be kicked out from hives.
7. A colony of bees can contain up to 70000 bees.
8. Honey bees can fly at the speed of 14 miles per hour.
9. Honey bees communicate through various means like chemicals and odors. But one of the typical ways of sharing the information about the food and direction by them is creating vibrations through dance.
10. Honey bees are generally considered to be the gentle creatures and wont sting until and unless they have been unnecessarily provoked or their hives have been attacked by the intruder.
