This antique cloissoné ring is a rare find: it features a highly unusual chevron pattern, with an inverted-scallop shape. It was made in the early 20th Century, most likely in China. To appreciate the craftsmanship of this ring, one needs to understand the process of making cloissoné. Derived from the French word cloison (meaning "to separate") in this process fine metals are soldered to create an outline of the desired pattern. These compartments are filled with different colors of opaque enamel, and the metallic outline emphasizes the intricacy of the design. This ring fits approximately a US size 8 or smaller; it is about .25" thick.
