This incredible 1960s dress is made of black velvet, featuring an empire waist and tiers of taffeta ruffles at the hem and along the V neckline. From his first label, Romantica by Victor Costa, this dress is classic Victor Costa, full of the romantic and feminine details for which the American designer is known.

After studying in Paris, Victor Costa got his start in the New York fashion world making wedding gowns, and he translated that same fantasy into his subsequent foray in the ready-to-wear world. He had so much success working for other lines that he was given his own line, Romantica by Victor Costa, in 1968, the period this dress is from. In 1973, he and his family left New York for his native Texas, where they settled in Dallas. He started his own eponymous label, Victor Costa, and cultivated an even larger following of customers and fans, including Whitney Houston and the cast of the television series Dynasty. Costa is best known for his decidedly "American" interpretation of European couture.
