Love is in the air. I have a thing for cherubs, and just in time for Valentine's Day is this golden cupid choker. The sculptural details of this piece make it a wearable work of art. The character of cupid as we know it is rooted in the myth involving his Greek counterpart, Eros. In Greek mythology, Eros oversaw passion and physical desire. He struck his targets' hearts with his bow, and in the words of Hesiod, he "loosens the limbs and weakens the mind." This piece was made as a brooch and can be worn as one, but I especially love it as a pendant on a choker. It comes on a black ribbon, but can also be worn on another chain, like the gold one shown here. It was made by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1994, who produced some amazing jewelry inspired by iconic works of art, especially up until the 1990s. Measures approximately 2" long, and signed MMA 1994. Great vintage condition, with some natural wear commensurate with age.
