This colors and details on this pendant are just exquisite; it's such a unique and versatile piece. It was made in the early 20th Century, most likely in China. To appreciate the craftsmanship of this necklace, one needs to understand the process of making cloissoné: Derived from the French word cloison (meaning "to separate") in this process fine metals are soldered to create an outline of the desired pattern. These compartments are filled with different colors of opaque enamel, and the metallic outline emphasizes the intricacy of the design. This pedant is a puffed donut shape, with the design extending to both sides. It comes attached to a fine black leather cord, but could easily be worn on a chain as well. Measures 1 9/16" diameter.
