Many requested it, and surprisingly many have already embraced it. Watery's unique wetsuit specifically designed for open water breaststroke, the Reptile Breast for ladies. A combination of a special composition of neoprene thickness, our flex-compound in the shoulders, and premium Jako neoprene, provides open water swimmers with the opportunity to swim breaststroke and front crawl in the optimal wetsuit.
What makes Reptile Breast unique for breaststroke swimming? Before we get to that, it's important to emphasize that the wetsuit can also be used for regular freestyle swimming. Reptile Breast is simply tailored specifically for breaststroke swimming.
Distribution of neoprene thickness
- While regular swim wetsuits aim to elevate the legs and torso in the water surface to maintain a streamlined position and minimize water resistance, the approach is different for breaststroke swimming. Therefore, the distribution of neoprene is adjusted accordingly, with 5 mm thickness on the front of the chest, 3 mm on the back, and only 2 mm on the legs. Ultimately, this design allows the legs to remain submerged in the water, facilitating a natural breaststroke technique.
High-stretch inner leg and arm panels (our unique Flex-compound)
- In breaststroke, the movement of the legs and arms is lateral rather than up and down as in freestyle. Therefore, the neoprene in Reptile Breast is equipped with our special Flex-compound on the inside, which is highly stretchable and naturally breathable.
In the end, these two features ensure that you maintain a natural breaststroke position in the water.
The entire wetsuit is treated with a smooth-skin surface, preventing water from penetrating the neoprene and thus avoiding getting wet on the inside, as well as preventing the suit from becoming heavy to swim in. Instead, water beads off, minimizing the drying time of the wetsuit after swimming. The smooth-skin also provides a protective layer, making it resistant to nails or quick removal of the wetsuit, which typically causes frustrating tears.
The Reptile Breast is constructed from Premium Jako neoprene, which, in addition to its long-lasting durability without becoming loose, is also particularly known for its high heat resistance, keeping the body warm in colder water. This allows you to swim for longer periods in the water with high performance.
Therefore, the Watery Reptile Breast wetsuit can also be used in water temperatures ranging from 10 to 26 degrees Celsius. In Ireland, this typically occurs from mid-April to the end of September.
The openings at the neck, wrists, and ankles are made with special no-leak panels featuring built-in lightweight elastic, preventing the wetsuit from filling up with cold water inside. To ensure comfort in these areas, the panels consist of only one layer. Additionally, the neckline is lowered to fit more naturally around the neck and closes tightly with the curved Velcro closure at the back, preventing uncomfortable chafing on the neck.
The suit is zipped at the back with the most durable YKK zip, made of stainless steel, and is additionally equipped with a cord attached to it, allowing you to easily pull the zip up over your head by yourself.
To ensure high visibility to large vessels in the water and those on the shore, the Reptile Breast wetsuit features a sleek print across the upper arm and full-colour printing on the back of the legs. In this ladies' model, it's in yellow, one of the most visible colours underwater and in the water.
The proper treatment of the wetsuit after each dip in the water is crucial for its long-term durability. The neoprene is the wetsuit is susceptible to damage over time from excessive salt (in the sea) or chlorine (in swimming pools).
You should rinse the wetsuit in cold water after each use, and if it has become particularly dirty, add a small amount of pH-neutral soap to maintain the neoprene optimally.
Then, it should be hung to dry until the moisture both inside and outside is gone before folding it and putting away. This can be done either indoors (with good ventilation) or outdoors (but not in direct sunlight).
When storing the wetsuit, it's important not to simply crumple it up. Instead, it should be hung on a hanger across the middle so that it doesn't crease in the most sensitive areas (shoulders, arms, legs), preserving the construction of the wetsuit.
