The burn time of a Lumiz lantern can vary. It depends on how much sunlight the lantern absorbs during the day and on the outdoor temperature. This variation is completely normal and typical of all battery-powered products.

The batteries in the solar modules come with thermal protection. This means they automatically shut down in extreme temperatures to prevent damage or overheating.

In hot weather:

If the battery temperature rises above approx. 60 °C (140 °F), it will automatically shut off. It may already perform slightly less efficiently from around 40 °C (104 °F). But don't worry – on such sunny days, the lanterns usually charge extra well.

In cold weather:

If the temperature drops below freezing (around –15 °C / 5 °F), the battery also shuts off to avoid damage. As soon as the temperature rises again, the lantern resumes normal function.

This smart safety system keeps your Lumiz lantern operating safely and reliably – all year round.

Each Lumiz lantern contains a rechargeable AAA NiMH battery (1.2 volts). This battery plays a vital role by storing the solar energy collected during the day. At dusk, it powers the LED light automatically.

Lumiz use NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) batteries, as they are more eco-friendly than older NiCd types and do not suffer from the "memory effect". This means you can recharge them even if they're not fully drained.

 Replacing the Battery

Always use a rechargeable AAA NiMH battery (1.2 V, approx. 700 mAh) when replacing it. Only then will your Lumiz continue to function properly and provide long-lasting, atmospheric outdoor lighting.

Rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan – it is recommended replacing them after 12 to 15 months of regular use.

If you store your Lumiz indoors during the winter, be sure to remove the battery to prolong the lifespan of both the lantern and the battery.

• Sunlight: Choose a spot that gets at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight per day

• Avoid shade: Keep the lantern away from trees, walls, or roof edges that cast shadows

• Keep the panel clean: Dust and dirt can reduce charging efficiency

• Freestanding or hanging: Position or hang the lantern so that the solar panel faces upward and remains unobstructed
