Supporting young tribal artisans from Manipur in making traditional black Longpi pottery and creating sustainable income opportunities for their future. This special technique is traditionally practiced by the Tangkhul Naga tribes of the Ukhrul district of Manipur, India.
The pottery has a rich black texture and is made by crushing weather rock / serpentinite and clay. Every piece is shaped by hand, then polished and etched by skilled artisans with the help of a bamboo blade. The pottery is removed from the kiln before the temperature falls and then covered with leaves known as chilon-na. The smoke of the leaves lends a black shade to the pottery.
This gorgeous handmade crockery is lead free and microwave and dishwasher safe.
