Marc Bolan was an English singer-songwriter, musician & poet. He is best remembered as the front man & driving force of the 1970s glam-rock band T.Rex. He is widely credited with initiating the glam-rock movement in UK pop music, but had been in the music-business since the mid 60s, working in various hippy-inspired folk-bands such as John’s Children & Tyrannosaurus Rex.
His pop-career took off in 1970 with the development of the new T.Rex sound which incorporated hard-rock guitars to give a more dynamic rock n’roll & boogie/ blues feel. Bolan also experimented with glittery costumes & make-up in a very showy & extravagant style, igniting the phenomenon the press dubbed T. Rexstacy in 1971. Notable albums from this period include Electric Warrior (1970) & The Slider (1971).
His failure in cracking the American market saw a decline in his popularity in the mid 70s, but he did stage a comeback in 1977 with a new album Dandy in the Underworld. He was planning to tour the album but was killed in a car-crash in the same year.
