Antique bodice jacket of Victorian origins, lined with a heavily polished cotton. Featuring close fitting front fastening which controls the front shaping. Close fitting inner lining allows for the softer outer bodice to give shape and style. Cotton lace frills to cuffs. Shaped two piece sleeve is very Victorian, as is the bodice seaming.

Lots of tiny hand finishing and overseen seam edges etc.

Inner lining also fastens with hooks and eyes and features a delightful little angled patch pocket!

As was common, it has been carefully adapted over the following decade to a later more edwardian style with pouch fronted styling, possibly shortened as part of this adaptation. Front fastening has also been altered to cross over further and reduce the waistline.

Decorative arts and crafts style beadwork on the shawl collar and cuff detail. It’s fascinating to try and unpick how and what has been altered in the historic remodelling process.

It is still a complete finished item, however, and I love the embellishments!

Condition:

Generally very good (alterations aside). Integrity of the fabric is good, no rot I can feel. A small amount of pinholes, and one small hole to outer. The odd loose bit of beadwork as shown.
