A rare silver Rolex trench watch from 1917, marked W&D, with early Rolex “b” signature and refinished enamel dial – a true collector’s piece.
In the early 20th century, Rolex established itself as a pioneer in wristwatch development, moving away from pocket watches at a time when wrist-worn timepieces were still considered novel. During World War I, Rolex trench watches became essential companions for officers in the field, combining reliability with practicality. These early models often featured luminous dials, robust wire lugs, and silver or nickel cases, setting the stage for Rolex’s reputation for durability and precision in decades to come.
What's on Offer
We are delighted to present this early Rolex trench watch, cased in solid silver and dating to around 1917. The watch bears the Wilsdorf & Davis (W&D) mark, tying it directly to Rolex’s earliest years, before the brand name took full precedence. The white enamel dial, which has been refinished, displays elegant Arabic numerals with a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock.
Importantly, this piece features the sought-after Rolex “b” mark, a coding used on early Aegler-supplied movements during Rolex’s formative years.
"Aegler Partnership: The mark is seen on cases for early Wilsdorf & Davis watches that contained Aegler-manufactured movements. Wilsdorf & Davis relied on Aegler for high-quality, small lever movements, especially the "Rebberg" calibres that were suitable for the emerging wristwatch market."
Collectors prize this subtle detail as it authenticates the watch as a genuine product of Rolex’s pioneering trench period. The watch is encapsulated beneath a Plexiglass crystal and retains a handsome silver case with wire lugs, offering a true glimpse into the transitional era from pocket watches to wristwatches.
This is a rare and evocative example of Rolex’s earliest wristwatches — one that embodies the innovation and military utility of the time, while carrying the marks of the brand’s legendary beginnings.
NB: This watch is offered for sale as seen, as the watches service history is unknown and we are selling it on behalf of a watch collector's family who have asked us to help sell an entire collection. As there are quite a few watches to dispose of, the clients do not wish to spend unnecessary money on servicing each watch before its sold so we have priced the watches to reflect it being sold un-serviced and without a warranty but it can be arranged with our watchmaker at an additional cost if you wish. Once you have made the purchase please add a note when placing it in your basket and we will contact you to discuss this. Once serviced the watch will be given a 12-month warranty.
